In person
I am a kiwi living in New Zealand with family in Chicago. I am also a researcher and author of the DistanceFamilies Book Series. Three of my four adult children and six of my seven grandchildren (4 mths – 24 yrs) live in Chicago, Atlanta, Edinburgh and Brighton, Exeter & Wiltshire in the U.K. Separately I am the co-chair of the Australia/NZ Affiliate of Families in Global Transition
My work has taught me:
- Every family is different – there’s no ‘one size fits all’ on how to do Distance Families but a few communication techniques and principles are universally invaluable.
- There are gaps in the knowledge of ‘how it is’ for the other generation/s of distance families. My goal is to help inform those voids. With knowledge comes understanding, and with understanding comes empathy and acceptance – both essential for well-functioning Distance Families.
- Distance Families CAN have close relationships – they are just different.
I am a long-distance member of Linda Mueller’s International Women in Chicago. Linda does a great job gathering local expats. She's supporting me in hosting a couple of ‘meet the author’ events for her members. The venues are TBA but more than likely in the vicinity of Lincoln Park. You’re most welcome – please join us for a relaxed chat about some of the helpful communication techniques and more.
